In recent decades it has become popular for certain theologians and ministers to be pro-abortion, with the claim that conscientious Christians can actually be pro-choice. The Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice, for instance, has adopted the motto, “Pro Faith. Pro Family. Pro Choice.” It was formerly called the Religious Coalition for Abortion Rights, and their previous motto was, “Prayerfully Pro-Choice.”
The arguments offered by these advocates are shallow, inconsistent, and violate the most basic principles of biblical interpretation. The “Christian” pro-choice position is nothing more than an accommodation to modern secular beliefs, and it flies in the face of the Bible and the historical position of the church. (1)
Children are the gift of God. Everything that happens in this world is because of the wishes of the God. If he wants a child to be born, he will take care of it as well. To kill a blossoming soul means that we are putting a hindrance in the way of God. If providence has given, it shall arrange for it too. Simply put, this means that if a child has been brought on earth, he or she should be given a full chance to live a life, as God must have planned something for him/her.
Some maintain that “nowhere does the Bible prohibit abortion.” Yet the Bible clearly prohibits the killing of innocent people (Exodus 20:13 “Thou shalt not kill.”). All that is necessary to prove a biblical prohibition of abortion is to demonstrate that the Bible considers the unborn to be human beings.
The Hebrews did not have or need a separate word for unborn children. They were just like any other children, only younger. In the Bible there are references to born children and unborn children, but there is no such thing as potential, incipient, or “almost” children.
The Bible never specifically addresses the issue of abortion. However, there are numerous teachings in Scripture that make it abundantly clear what God’s view of abortion is.
Jeremiah 1:5 (KJV) tells us that God knew us before He created us.
“5 Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations..”
_ Psalm 139:13-16 (KJV) speaks of God’s active role in our creation and formation in the womb. These words are so beautiful….
13 For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother’s womb. 14 I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well. 15 My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. 16 Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them.
God’s character goes into the creation of every person. We should have as much respect for ourselves and our unborn children as our Maker has for us.
God takes abortion very seriously. The Bible prescribes the same penalty (death) for someone who causes the death of a baby in the womb as for someone who commits murder.
This clearly indicates that God considers a baby in the womb to be as human as a full-grown adult.
Exodus 21:22-25
“22 If men strive, and hurt a woman with child, so that her fruit depart from her, and yet no mischief follow: he shall be surely punished, according as the woman’s husband will lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine. 23 And if any mischief follow, then thou shalt give life for life, 24 Eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, 25 Burning for burning, wound for wound, stripe for stripe. ”
For the Christian, abortion is not a matter of a woman’s right to choose. It is a matter of the life or death of a human being made in God’s image.
Genesis 9:6 (KJV)
6 Whoso sheddeth man’s blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made he man.
Two Arguments to Consider:
- “What about cases of rape and/or incest?”
First of all, rape and/or incest is horrible!
Should we ask ourselves if two wrongs make a right?
There are options: adoption, families unable to have children, the child’s mother!
“What about when the life of the mother is at risk?”
Very difficult question to answer, who do you sacrifice? The mother or the child?
This reason represents less than one-tenth of one percent of the abortions done in the world today. Over 95 percent of the abortions performed today involve women who simply do not want to have a baby. That is so sad.
Remember that God is a God of miracles and a God of wisdom. No matter what reason you think you have for giving up the life of your unborn child please pray to the Lord for wisdom.
James 1:5 (KJV)
5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.
By “wisdom,” James is talking not only about knowledge, but about the ability to make wise decisions in difficult circumstances. Whenever we need wisdom, we can pray to God and He will supply what we need. We can ask God’s wisdom to guide our choices.
Wisdom begins with respect for God, leads to right living, and results in the ability to tell right from wrong. So if abortion is on your mind the please pray to the Lord for his divine guidance.
Remember that the sin of abortion is no less forgivable than any other sin.
Through faith in Christ, all sins can be forgiven. The woman, the man who encouraged the abortion, and the doctor who has performed it…. yes, all of these are guilty of this sin…and they can all be forgiven by faith in Jesus Christ.
The Bible says that there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus
and so when we ask Him for forgiveness, He freely gives it. This is not because we deserve it, but because this is the loving nature of our Lord.
Romans 8:1 (KJV)
There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
How can a woman experience healing and recovery after an abortion?
Sad to say, having an abortion and regretting it later is an all-too-common experience.
There are many reasons to want an abortion…because the woman is scared, confused, desperate, and extremely vulnerable; but none are justifiable.
In their search for answers, they are fooled into believing that unborn children are expendable “lumps of tissue,” not really pre-born human beings. The revelation usually comes later in the form of depression.
While what has been done cannot be undone, women can experience healing and recovery after an abortion.
The God of all comfort and healing is more than able to ease the sorrow and pain of an abortion and can restore women to life and joy.
The good news for anyone who has had an abortion, is that God offers forgiveness to anyone who asks for it.
Romans 3:22
22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:
