A Prayer for America
By: Dr. David Jeremiah
Heavenly Father, Almighty God,
In all history, there has been only one
nation like America–founded by
Pilgrims seeking freedom to worship,
established on a vast continent between
two oceans, dedicated to the proposition
that we are created equal and endowed
by our Creator with certain unalienable
rights: One nation under God.
You have delivered us in war, prospered
us in peace, and raised up generations
willing to offer the last full measure
of their devotion for the preservation
of liberty at home and abroad.
We have been a light for the world.
From our shores has gone the greatest
missionary force in history.
But now, Lord, America has fallen into
darkness, disobedience, and indifference.
We have sinned; and we Your people,
Lord, humble ourselves, and pray
and seek Your face, and
turn from our wicked ways.
Please forgive our sin and heal our land.
Give us leaders who understand the times
and know what we should do.
May the torch of liberty burn brightly,
inflamed by the goodness of Your people.
God bless America.
In Jesus’ Name,
Amen
14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. ~ 2 Chronicles 7:14
We, as Americans, should never live in fear of our government. However, look around you. Everywhere we are there the government is, using its might and power to block some of our more basic rights. The government has grown so powerful that every aspect of our lives is controlled by it. This is by no means what the founding fathers intended.
We, as Americans, should heed these words of Thomas Jefferson:
“When the government fears the people there is liberty; when the people fear the government there is tyranny.”
To reemphasize the words of Jonathan Mayhew, quoted previously:
“Till people find themselves greatly abused and oppressed by their governors, they are not apt to complain; and whenever they do, in fact, find themselves thus abused and oppressed, they must be stupid not to complain”
We must complain. Complain at the ballot box. It is the duty of each American citizen to vote. It is our sacred duty ordained by God to vote for our elected officials and insure we get a government that believes in the Word of God and the teachings of Jesus Christ.
Noah Webster stated:
“God commands you to choose for rulers, just men who will rule in the fear of God. The preservation of a republican government depends on the faithful discharge of this duty; if the citizens neglect their duty and place unprincipled men in office, the government will soon be corrupted; laws will be made, not for public good, so much as for selfish or local purposes; corrupt or incompetent men will be appointed to execute the laws; the public revenues will be squandered on unworthy men; and the rights of the citizens will be violated or disregarded.
“Now therefore behold the king whom ye have chosen, and whom ye have desired! and, behold, the LORD hath set a king over you.”—1 Samuel 12:13 (KJV)
The words of Noah Webster, written over 200 years ago, ring true today. We have elected “unprincipled men” to office in all areas of our government. Our government has been corrupted and laws have been made, “not for public good, so much as for selfish or local purposes.” “Corrupt or incompetent men” have been appointed to execute the laws, and “the public revenues” have been “squandered on unworthy men” and “the right of the citizens” have “been violated or disregarded.”
The laws, people, and money Mr. Webster warned us about have come to reality. Our basic right of freedom of religion has been denied us by these same men.
“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”—Ephesians 6:12 (KJV)
If we believe that the Founding Fathers were correct in asserting that America would fail if it lost its religious foundation, it is primarily incumbent upon Christian believers to reaffirm and reclaim our Christian educational heritage with the same passion and commitment of the Founders. There are many ways and many levels at which to instigate change, but it begins with a willingness to become engaged in battle.
We must engage in battle. We must battle the powers that control this once great nation with the power of God. We must turn back to our founding principles of Christianity and take back our government created by the people, for the people, as one nation under God.
We are on a slippery slope here and we must take the reigns and make sure we don’t fall off the cliff into oblivion. God blessed this country once and let’s all make sure he blesses us again. If we want to be the “nation under God”, with the Christian principles and Christian ethics that was the foundation of this great country, we must act now. We must all pray for our country and pray for our leaders to once again seek the council and the wisdom from our Lord, Jesus Christ. We must contact all our friends and relatives, all our co-workers and ask everyone we meet to pray for our nation and to ask for deliverance from the evil that is so abundant in our society. We must be like Paul Revere and give the warning of impending doom if we do not seek the blessings of God.
Pray for our country and our leaders. Pray that our leaders get the wisdom to lead us back to the land of our Puritan founders. A One Nation Under God that is America. Pray to God for forgiveness of all of our sins, personal and national. We must beg forgiveness and truly repent our sins for God to hear our prayer. Pray that God forgive our nation for the sins of excess and sins of omission. Beg forgiveness for our nation’s sins against its citizens and the sins against all mighty God.
All mighty father and merciful God, we pray that you give the Wisdom of Solomon and the patience of Job to our leaders so they might lead us back to the path of righteousness. Father forgive this nation for all of its sins against you and against the citizens of this once great nation. Heavenly Father bless this great nation of ours and help us to return to the teachings of our Lord Jesus. We pray that our leaders can see the path you set forth for this great nation 400 years ago. Let us not be like the ancient Israelites who turn their back on you after being delivered from Egypt. Let us see the error of our ways and come back to the loving and merciful God that you are.
Dear Lord let us be willing to be used by You to help turn this great nation back to your Glory. Let us stand up and make our lives to be the strength in our families and neighborhoods and workplaces. Let us all go forth and make an effort to bring our state and national leaders back into the righteousness that God had proclaimed to our Founding Fathers. We know You want to come and bless us, to forgive our sins and heal our nation. Please oh Lord, give us all the courage and strength to go forward and tell all who will listen, that we must bring our country back to the Lord our God, in Jesus name we pray. ~ Amen
And when He was come near, He beheld the city, and wept over it . . . .”—Luke 19:41 (KJV)
