The Abortion Debate Continues

Three years ago, I wrote about what the Bible says about abortion and I stated …Remember that God is a God of miracles and a God of wisdom.  No matter what reason you think you have for giving up the life of your unborn child please pray to the Lord for wisdom.

James 1:5 (KJV)

If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

By “wisdom,” James is talking not only about knowledge, but about the ability to make wise decisions in difficult circumstances.  Whenever we need wisdom, we can pray to God and He will supply what we need.  We can ask God’s wisdom to guide our choices.

Wisdom begins with respect for God, leads to right living, and results in the ability to tell right from wrong.  So, if abortion is on your mind the please pray to the Lord for his divine guidance.

Remember that the sin of abortion is no less forgivable than any other sin.

Through faith in Christ, all sins can be forgiven.  The woman, the man who encouraged the abortion, and the doctor who has performed it…. yes, all of these are guilty of this sin…and they can all be forgiven by faith in Jesus Christ.

The Bible says that there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus

and so, when we ask Him for forgiveness, He freely gives it. This is not because we deserve it, but because this is the loving nature of our Lord.

Now three years later:

More and more states are giving such wide latitude to who can have an abortion and why, up to and including live birth abortions. While other states are going the other way.  Several states have used the determining factor to be if there is a heart beat you cannot abort the baby.

Each year, almost half of all pregnancies among American women are unintended. About half of these unplanned pregnancies, 1.3 million each year, are ended by abortion.

There are many myths and misconceptions about who gets abortions, and why. The fact is that the women who have abortions come from all racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, and religious backgrounds. If current rates continue, it is estimated that 35% of all women of reproductive age in America today will have had an abortion by the time they reach the age of 45.

Someone wrote in her letter to the editor of the Las Vegas Review Journal, May 30, 2019: “A fetus is not a person – not yet. The fetus does have a beating heart, but it is the brain that makes it a person.”  She quotes Bible Scripture; Genesis 2:7 “And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.”  to claim the baby has no soul until it enters the body when they first take a breath. I respect her right to her opinion, but I do want to present another side to this debate.

Since she is agreeing that humans do have souls and that God made man and woman, I wish to address this issue from a biblical standpoint.

The Bible never specifically addresses the issue of abortion. However, there are numerous teachings in Scripture that make it abundantly clear what God’s view of abortion is.

The Bible tells us that God knew us before He created us.

Jeremiah 1:5 (KJV)

Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.

The Bible speaks of God’s active role in our creation and formation in the womb.

Psalm 139:13-16 (KJV)

13 For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother’s womb.14 I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well. 15 My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. 16 Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them.

God takes abortion very seriously. The Bible prescribes the same penalty (death) for someone who causes the death of a baby in the womb as for someone who commits murder.

This clearly indicates that God considers a baby in the womb to be as human as a full-grown adult.

Exodus 21:22-25 (KJV)

22 If men strive, and hurt a woman with child, so that her fruit depart from her, and yet no mischief (meaning harm) follow: he shall be surely punished, according as the woman’s husband will lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine. 23 And if any mischief(meaning harm)  follow, then thou shalt give life for life, 24 Eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, 25 Burning for burning, wound for wound, stripe for stripe.

Two Arguments to Consider:

  1. “What about cases of rape and/or incest?”

First of all, rape and/or incest is horrible!  Should we ask ourselves if two wrongs make a right? There are options: adoption, families unable to have children, the child’s mother!

  1. “What about when the life of the mother is at risk?”

Very difficult question to answer, who do you sacrifice? The mother or the child?

This reason represents less than one-tenth of one percent of the abortions done in the world today. Over 95 percent of the abortions performed today involve women who simply do not want to have a baby.  That is so sad.

Sad to say, having an abortion and regretting it later is an all-too-common experience.

There are many reasons to want an abortion…because the woman is scared, confused, desperate, and extremely vulnerable; but none are justifiable.

In their search for answers, they are fooled into believing that unborn children are expendable “lumps of tissue,” not really pre-born human beings. The revelation usually comes later in the form of depression.

While what has been done cannot be undone, women can experience healing and recovery after an abortion.

The God of all comfort and healing is more than able to ease the sorrow and pain of an abortion and can restore women to life and joy.

The good news for anyone who has had an abortion, is that God offers forgiveness to anyone who asks for it.

So, to avoid this scenario don’t have an abortion.  And better yet, if you don’t want to have a baby take protective action or simply abstain and wait for God to lead you to the right time with the right person…. All life is sacred in the eyes of God.

Deuteronomy 30:19 (KJV)

19 I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live:
